The History of the Museum

One of the first of its kind in Uzbekistan, the private house museum honoring the famous Amet and Ayimkhan Shamuratov is a well-known and richly cultural sight based in Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan. It was founded in 1999 by the personal funds of the Shamuratov children. The museum contains an array of literary works by writer, poet, playwright & statesman Amet Shamuratov (1912-1953), as well as Karakalpak relics treasured by his wife, Ayimkhan Shamuratova (1917-1993). Having no shortage of fame herself, Ayimkhan had been one of the first women in the history of Karakalpakstan to grace the stage, accumulating over a hundred-odd roles and captivating audiences with her unique voice. This power couple helped reshape the field of arts in Karakalpakstan, their lives a testament to the active part they played in the formation and development of Karakalpak culture, literature and art of the twentieth century.
